How This Tracker Works

This tracker measures job losses and job creation in the UK offshore energy sector since the introduction of the Energy Profits Levy (EPL) in May 2022.

Data Sources

• SerpAPI — Google News Search API
• Article HTML scraped and cleaned using DOMDocument
• ONS Postcode API for region classification

What Is Counted?

Job Losses: Oil and gas articles containing numeric job loss phrases.

Job Creation: Renewables articles indicating new jobs created.

Methods

• 25+ search queries covering layoffs, redundancies, job creation
• Full article text scraped and processed
• Regex extraction for job numbers
• Keyword + postcode-based region detection
• Monthly time-series chart
• Year selection and month navigation

Limitations

• Some articles block scraping
• Paywalled sources may be incomplete
• Job numbers sometimes not reported explicitly
• Classification uses intelligent heuristics, not manual verification
